Romblon State University’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) conducted the Basic Life Support and Fire Suppression Training – Workshop (BLAST) on September 29-30, 2026, at the RSU Main Campus, University Quadrangle. The two-day disaster preparedness training equipped participants with hands-on knowledge in emergency response, first aid, lifesaving interventions, and fire suppression.

On the first day, the training opened with an orientation on disaster risk reduction and management led by Ms. Geneza O. Jasa, Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer of Odiongan, and FINSP Joey G. Selorio, Acting Municipal Fire Marshal of the Odiongan Fire Station. The sessions introduced participants to the responsibilities and response measures expected before, during, and after emergencies. They were also introduced to practical emergency response skills during the Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid sessions. This part focused on the importance of immediate and appropriate action in situations where timely intervention can make a critical difference while professional medical assistance is being mobilized.

The training continued on the second day with a Fire Suppression Training Workshop facilitated by the Bureau of Fire Protection. Participants engaged in fire-safety instruction and practical exercises designed to familiarize them with basic fire suppression procedures and the proper response to fire incidents. The program also provided a venue for strengthening coordination between the University’s DRRMO and local disaster and fire-response offices, bringing together institutional and community-based perspectives on emergency preparedness.

In his closing message, Mr. Abraham L. Cuevas, Chief Administrative Officer for Administration, emphasized the importance of preparedness in safeguarding the University community. The activity concluded with the distribution of certificates and a meeting between the participants and the DRRM team.

This successful event was through the efforts of the DRRM Office under the leadership of Director Rommel H. Glori.

With emergencies requiring not only awareness but also the ability to act, the two-day training placed emphasis on turning preparedness into practical, usable skills, from providing immediate first aid and basic life support to responding appropriately to fire emergencies.
